8 Reasons Why You Aren't Losing Weight

More often than not, we wonder why we are stuck and not losing weight anymore, or maybe haven’t even started to even though we’ve been putting in major effort to try and start our weight loss journey. We get told so many different opinions and options for what we should do, but what’s the REAL answer? What are we supposed to do if we can’t seem to get past a weight loss plateau, or even get those first 5 pounds down? I may not have all the answers for you, however, I can let you know some things you may be doing wrong!
Sometimes we do the wrong things even though we think it may benefit our weight loss, or we just don’t know any better! Maybe we haven’t been paying close enough attention to certain details, or maybe we are overlooking certain instances where we could’ve went wrong in our weight loss journey. I’m here to let you know about some reasons as to why you may not be losing weight. So let’s get to it!
You aren’t drinking enough water
This is one that is extremely overlooked! I’m sure you all know the importance of drinking water (and if you don’t, read about it HERE), but we’ve all underestimated the amount of water we drink in a day. The benefits of drinking enough water are endless, and in this situation, drinking enough water is crucial because it helps speed up your metabolism, gets rid of bloating, and helps your body start working to help burn off those calories! Try to drink AT LEAST 8 8oz glasses of water a day, but if you can reach a gallon of water a day, you’ve just accelerated your fat loss way more!
You're eating too much
This is a common one. You may not even realize it, but you may be eating too many calories. Weight loss is all about burning more calories than you consume, so if you are eating too many calories than you burn in a day, that will result in weight gain. You're eating too little
Yes, this is actually possible! You may not be eating enough! If you aren’t eating enough calories, your body basically goes into starvation mode, so most of what you consume, your body tries to store as fat because it’s not sure when it will get any more calories and nutrients. You may not even know that you are under eating. You’re eating the wrong kinds of food
This can be a common mistake as a lot of people know about getting enough or not enough of calories, however they skip over a big issue. You’re not getting enough of sleep
This is definitely an easily missed cause of stopping us from any weight loss. Most of us struggle with getting enough sleep each night, am I right? However, did you know how much not getting enough of sleep negatively affects us? It is a super common mistake people make, and not enough of us know that if we don’t get enough of those zzz’s in, that it will hinder our weight loss journey. I know how hard it is when you have a life, and kids, and jobs, and things to do, but please try your hardest to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night. Your body will thank you and in return, you may be surprised at seeing more weight drop from your increased efforts!
You’re not getting enough exercise
Ok, so you may be eating enough, getting enough sleep, and even drinking enough water, however, if you aren’t getting enough exercise, you may be stopping yourself from losing any weight. Here we come back to calories in versus calories out. We may be eating enough calories, but if we are not burning enough calories throughout our day, we can easily be stalling our weight loss. If you want to make sure you continue to lose weight, make sure you are getting enough daily exercise to make sure you are using up more calories than you consume.
Also, if you are not sweating during your workout, that could be another reason. If your intensity for your workout isn’t enough, that could easily hinder your weight loss journey. Make sure your work out is intense enough to where you actually get a sweat going on. After all, sweat is just our fat crying, so we want to sweat a lot!
You’ve hit a plateau
This one can be easily missed. Ok, so you started out great, you’ve lost some weight, but then, all of a sudden, the weight loss stopped. You’ve been doing the same thing for weeks, but suddenly it’s not working anymore. You could have hit a plateau. Hitting a plateau means your body got used to the amount of calories or the amount of activity you were doing. Our bodies are smart and if they start to get used to something we are doing, they change in order to put in less effort, meaning they stop working as hard. By switching our diet up a little bit (reducing some calories, cutting out more sugar or fat), switching up a work out routine, or maybe just putting in a little more intensity into the work out is a great way to get past that plateau.
You’re too stressed out
The unavoidable stress. We all go through it. No matter how much we try to avoid it, it still ends up getting to us. Stress may be unavoidable, but sometimes it tends to take over us and gets overwhelming. When this happens, it could stall your weight loss. Cortisol, the “stress hormone” rises when we get stressed, resulting in our hunger increasing for those sugary and fatty foods. When we get stressed out, don’t we sometimes go for those comfort foods that we know when we take the first bite, we are filled with a great satisfaction? Little do we know that if we weren’t as stressed out, we may not have even wanted that donut, or that juicy burger, or even those salty potato chips! If you are feeling yourself becoming overwhelmed with stress, try your best to set some time aside to de-stress a little. Do a 10 minute guided meditation, go for a walk, relax on the couch and watch a movie, take a candle lit bubble bath, or even just enjoy 5-10 minutes of pure silence! Anything helps, and your body will thank you!
So there you have it! 8 reasons you may have easily overlooked, could quite possibly be the reason(s) you aren’t losing the weight you want! Make sure you put these reasons into consideration while you are on your weight loss journey, and you’re sure to continue to see progress! These reasons can all be easily overlooked or forgotten about, so it’s always great to have a reminder given to make sure we stay on track for all of our fitness and weight loss goals!
